Decline and Collapse of The Maurya and Gupta Empires
Collapse of The Gupta Empire
In 550 C.E the Gupta Empire collapsed mostly due to the financial pressure of nomadic tribes that came in from central Asia (Huns. Turks, and Mongols) the defense of the far away frontier region exhausted the treasury causing it to collapse. By the end of the seventh century, the Gupta Empire no longer existed. There was no unity in India until the next five centuries. Like the Mauryan Empire, the Gupta also fell into an era of political fragmentation allowing a lot of cultural events to flourish. |
Collapse of The Maurya Empire
Weakened by dynastic disputes and the expense of maintaining a large army and a administrative bureaucracy the Mauryan Empire collapsed in 184 B.C.E. Attacks from the northwest also lead the collapse of this empire. After the fall, foreign occupiers such as the Indo- Greeks, Kushans, and Shakas started to take control in the northwest (political fragmentation) This era of political fragmentation north, central, and south India started to experience different patters of development such as great artistic and linguistic achievement. |
